Medical experts say the ingredients in sunscreen are are key to protection, but debate is now raging about the safety of a common ingredient in sunscreen – oxybenzone, also known as benzophenone 3, an organic compound.
A study by the Centers for Disease Control found the compound in 97 percent of the 2,500 human urine samples tested.
Now some health experts and environmentalists question its safety.

A database created by the Environmental Working Group, based in Washington DC, lists more than 1,000 sunscreens and their ingredients. The EWG found four out of five sunscreens contain chemicals that may pose health hazards or don’t adequately protect skin from the sun’s rays.
Oxybenzone is listed as a chemical related to cancer, developmental reproductive toxicity and allergies.
When applied, oxybenzone penetrates the skin.

Devil’s Gene-mapping Study Shows Devils Most at Risk for Melanoma
The study, led by Professors Julia Newton Bishop and Tim Bishop (left) of the Melanoma Genetics Consortium (GenoMEL) at the University of Leeds in England, looked at more than 10,000 people, comparing those who have been diagnosed with melanoma to those who do not have the disease.

Across the large sample, a number of clear genetic patterns emerged. It is already well known that red-haired people, those with fair skin and those who sunburn easily are most at risk of melanoma, and the people who had been diagnosed with melanoma were found to be much more likely to be carrying the genes most closely associated with red hair and freckles.
“This is what we expected to find,” said Professor Bishop of the Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine and the Cancer Research UK Centre at Leeds. “But the links seemed to be much stronger than we anticipated.
